The 5 best places for forest bathing in Berlin

When was the last time you went to the forest and connected with nature? City folks are often quite disconnected to nature. Don’t get me wrong, I love the city and all its energy, chaos and vibrancy, however getting out into green forests and landscapes is an integral part of my self-care practice.

What is Forest Bathing?

The term and practice of forest bathing started in Japan in the 1980s. Known as shinrin-yoku, it was created to counteract burnout and stress, and to help people reconnect with the country’s forests. Though in many cultures and practices (mostly non-western) this practice has long been known to benefit human health.

Studies have shown the numerous psychological, physical and emotional benefits of forest bathing. In fact, in Scottish medical doctors now prescribe nature to their patients. In my own practice, I often ‘prescribe’ forest bathing to my clients - especially those with root chakra imbalances.

How do you forest bathe?

Forest bathing can be as simple as taking a short walk through a forest or natural landscape, offline without your phone, and consciously connecting to your surroundings. This means immersing your senses into the experience of simply being in nature.

What do you see, hear, smell or touch? Move slowly, preferably barefoot, taking in the natural wonders around you and feeling the interconnectedness of everything.

Breathe in the forest air slowly, walk mindfully and consciously. There is no rush or urgency, you are here to simply be.

Where can you go forest bathing in Berlin?

Berlin is surrounded by many beautiful forests that are ideal for forest bathing. Here are a few popular options near Berlin that are easily reachable by bike and train (<1 hour) where you can forest bathe. No car necessary!

  1. Jungfernheide Forest

Bordering the northern perimeter of the former Tegel Airport, Jungfernheide Forst is a magical, old forest that’s been largely left alone - a rarity in Germany. Easily accessible rom the U6, this forest boasts the beautiful Flughafensee as well as the Havel River for all your watery lake Spaß needs. Filled with many pretty trails and walkways, this forest is my go-to favourite for Waldbaden in Berlin.

  2. Grünau Forest

Located in the Southeast part of Berlin right along the Dahme River, is the huge, gorgeous forest of Grünau. Very close to S-Bahn Grünau station, this forest boasts a tram stop as well. It has loads of space to explore and discover. Definitely check out the coastline along the Dahme for magical vibes and swimming possibilities. You can stop for some delicious German food at Hanfs Ruh in the middle of the forest, definitely a nice vibe!

  3. Wuhlheide

You might not think that a forest with an outdoor concert venue and children’s museum and small railway would be a great place for forest bathing, but the sprawling Wuhlheide has a lot to offer. Located in Schöneweide and not far from S-Bahn Schöneweide (but easily reachable with the tram) as well as S-Bahn Wühlheide Station, this park is full of beautiful nature to discover. There are spots where you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.

  4. Müggelsee Lake and Forest

Müggelsee Lake and Forest is a serene and picturesque destination in the southeast of Berlin. Surrounded by dense forest, the lake is the largest in the city and a popular spot for swimming, boating, and picnicking. The forest itself offers miles of walking trails, perfect for a peaceful stroll or an invigorating hike. Check out the Müggelturm for some scenic views of Berlin and Köpenick and an old bog nearby as well. This place is huge and full of magic!

  5. Grünewald Forest

This 3,000-hectare natural gem in western Berlin is popular for hiking, cycling, and picnicking. Known for its rolling hills, peaceful lakes, and diverse wildlife, this forest has a rich cultural history and remains a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts. Get there easily with the S-Bahn and take your time exploring the lush green forest. There’s even a sand dune that’s very fun to roll down! Grunewald Forest is a must-visit for anyone seeking peace and beauty in the heart of the city.
